A Coincidental Encounter
Author: Lee Hyo-seok
Published in Chosun Ji-gwang, Issue 85.
Gye-sun and I had three strange encounters during her lifetime. Over the course of just seven years, these three chance meetings occurred. How did her life change, and how did her destiny unfold each time?
These three encounters merely show three cross-sections of her turbulent life, but through them, one can easily glimpse her ill-fated life.
Having had three such chance encounters, I cannot help but think there was some thread of strange fate between us. Whenever I deeply mourn her tragic life and think of her, a great resentment and a terrifying resolve are always renewed in my heart.
Next, I intend to record these three chance encounters in chronological order. Even if they become three pieces of dry, disconnected fragments, it is not my fault, but the fault of the universe's will, which always designs human life in such a way.
It was eight years ago.
At that time, by chance, I came to know a strange old woman. In the vast world of the capital city, there is a class of people deeply submerged in the dark side of life, securing their livelihood through their own unique means. They are a flock of old butterflies who, dwelling in the dim darkness, act as intermediaries between beautiful flowers, blooming faint fragments of brilliant dreams in their hearts to glorify their past, while simultaneously managing their actual lives. The old woman I came to know was, so to speak, one of this flock.
There was a certain commercial arrangement between the old woman and me, and for the butterfly role she was to play, I had already paid the considerable fee she demanded. As the first step of her role, she led me to the promised place. There, I was to view a flower I did not yet know.
"Just meet her, the person is quite decent. She is educated, kind-hearted, and has an agreeable appearance. As for housekeeping, she is perfectly prepared... You keep looking only for looks, but where can you find a beauty painted with a brush just like that? Just take a look, but for a woman, after all, housekeeping is the most important thing."
The slightly hunched old woman, leading the way, repeated this familiar speech several times.
"Besides, she is a pure virgin, and she is fluent in English and Japanese..."
Turning from the main street into a back alley, and from the back alley into an even narrower alley, chattering all the while, the old woman stopped in front of a small side-dish shop at a three-way intersection. That was the very house we were heading to. Realizing there was no one in the shop, the old woman went around to the back and reached a small gate.
It was a dilapidated thatched cottage. It was so blackened by soot that even the characters on the nameplate were illegible. However, I still did not abandon the beautiful dream I held in my heart.
Pearls are always hidden deep in the mud of the ocean. How many melted pearls might be hidden inside this soot-covered thatched cottage?
Opening the gate with ease, the old woman entered without hesitation. However, quite excited by a mix of beautiful dreams and a slight sense of shame, I could not easily step inside and stood outside the door, hesitating for a long time.
After what seemed like a lot of bargaining that delayed us for quite a while, the old woman finally came out and welcomed me in with a smile and a wink. As it was my first time experiencing this, I felt quite awkward and hesitated, until the old woman grabbed my wrist and pulled me in.
A low roof, crumbling walls, torn paper doors, a broken jar stand. The signs of decay and ruin were clearly visible on everything. The situation of the house, seemingly barely managing to drag along a declining livelihood by running a small side-dish shop, was unmistakably apparent at first glance.
But none of that mattered. My goal lay in the beautiful pearl hidden within.
Hurriedly clearing away the messy pile of clothes meant for washing on the wooden porch, the old woman offered me a seat. Even after I sat on the edge of the porch and waited for a long time, the beautiful pearl did not come out quickly, as if buried in some corner.
"What is the matter with modern folks... He is waiting, so come out quickly."
Keenly observing my anxious state, the old woman shouted toward the inner room.
"Oh my, being so shy, how did she even attend school?"
As the old woman shouted once more and laughed heartily, the door to the inner room opened lightly, and someone stepped out softly.
"This is it!"
As I realized this immediately, my heart fluttered inexplicably. But since I eventually had to see, I gathered my courage, raised my face, and looked up at her.
There was a momentary death.
After that moment passed, a whirlwind of surprise, doubt, and agitation blew through me.
Once that whirlwind passedโGye-sun! Proper consciousness finally returned to me.
"Gye-sun!"
It was undeniably Gye-sun.
On her face, which had also clearly recognized me, flowed a complex expression of what could be surprise, joy, or sorrow. She finally bowed her head...
This was our first coincidental encounter, and leading up to this encounter, there was a past of about three years.
Back then, three years ago.
At the Nagwon-dong intersection, there was a tile-roofed house with a large signboard; it was one of the premier inns in the capital. At the time, as a mere student, I was boarding at this inn, which also served as a boarding house.
In this bustling house, there was a single flower growing beautifully and carefully. It was the owner's daughter, Gye-sun. In this inn where dozens of travelers came and went daily and over ten students bustled about, she alone grew up pure and clear. However, as her studies progressed and she reached a ripe age, the owner secretly began to search for a suitable match for her.
Around this time, whatever caught their eye, out of all the many people, they kept me in their hearts the most. So gradually, I came to know her and associate with her.
Eventually, her mother even sent her to my room carrying an English book. When the cherry blossoms bloomed, we went to the Changgyeongwon Zoo together, and when the moon was bright, they even cleared the quiet wooden porch for us.
However, for some reason, my heart did not ignite. Even if it does not ignite at the first moment, it can gradually burn as time passes, but this did not ignite to the very end, even as months and years passed. My heart remained consistently clear and firm. The more proactive they were, the more cautious and passive my attitude became. In other words, there was nothing in her to spark my passion. Where nothing burns, there can be no mischief, let alone love. When I left that house, I felt a sense of mutual safety and liberation.
During the long period from then until our first coincidental encounter, I did not meet her at all. When I visited the house a few months after leaving, they had already moved away to some unknown place, and the inn was being run under someone else's ownership.
Of course, I had no need or made no effort to find them again, and for about three years, their whereabouts remained a mystery. Eventually, even the name Gye-sun had gradually faded from my memory.
When she lifted her head after bowing it for a long while, two streaks of tears shone on Gye-sun's cheeks. Her wet eyes, looking up at me, seemed both resentful and pleading.
I could not look at her straight on. Deeply sunken eyes, hollowed cheeks; just as the dozens of rooms in the tile-roofed house had turned into a single-room thatched cottage, her once full and taut appearance was completely broken.
Although I had maintained strict integrity to the end and had not a single clouded spot in my heart, faced with her broken figure and pleading tears, I could not help but feel a slight pang of guilt and apology.
For a long time, I was stunned, not even knowing what to say.
"So, it seems you two already knew each other."
The old woman, quite bewildered by this unexpected sudden drama, broke the silence like this.
"Well, of course, how could modern folks have stayed still until now... Sit down leisurely and pour out all the feelings you have kept bottled up."
Saying this, the old woman stepped out ahead of us.
The old woman's flattering tone was deeply unpleasant to me now. And regarding Gye-sun, I felt endlessly ashamed of myself for having followed the old woman here like this.
However, since I had already stepped inside, I was curious about the circumstances that led them to their present state. The fact that a large tile-roofed house had turned into a tiny thatched cottage in just a few years, that a premier inn in the capital had become a small side-dish shop in a back alley, and that they had entrusted their precious, dearly raised daughter to the hands of a strange old womanโit was too massive a change. I wanted to know everything.
"Where has your mother gone?"
When I barely opened my mouth and asked her, her mother, who was in the room, opened the door and came out looking apologetic.
"What a surprise this is!"
She was also surprised by the completely unexpected reunion. I silently expressed my gladness and then immediately asked.
"What exactly happened?"
Her expression, sighing deeply as if overwhelmed with emotion, seemed somewhat dark, and her face, which had inexplicably gained only wrinkles, seemed to flush slightly in shame. However, her answer was extremely brief.
They originally had a lot of debt. On top of that, being inexperienced in business, there was little profit from the inn they ran, and the debts they could not repay steadily grew. The relentless pressure from the terrifying creditors worsened daily, and ultimately, having no other way, their inn was seized. Since they could not just cut off their young lives, they had to live as long as they had breath, so they had no choice but to rent a single-room thatched cottage and drag on their sorrowful day-to-day existence.
It was an overly simple and ordinary story, but her solemn, emotional tone seemed to pierce into my bones with a terrifying truthfulness. It might be a common, ordinary fact, but to them, who had actually lived through the process with flesh and blood, it could never be ordinary or simple. Their ruined appearance spoke of this.
"So, there is no real livelihood to speak of; we just live because we cannot die."
In her dismal tone, not a single trace of the luxurious past could be found.
They had merely taken one step ahead in the fate of ruin that eventually awaited them all sooner or later, but I could not help but be shocked by their sudden, precipitous downfall.
"If we could just quickly find a partner for that child, we could figure out how to live on our own or do something."
When the conversation turned to Gye-sun's personal matters, I felt distressed. Wishing to avoid involvement in her affairs as much as possible, I simply remained silent.
"She is getting older, and with our destitute living, there is no point in her just staying stuck at home..."
It was a pitiful situation. But no matter how much I sympathized with everything, what could I do about this matter? It was impossible for my heart, which was already cold in the past, to suddenly boil over now. It was simply unfortunate that our distance had been close in the past, and it was my mistake to have learned of their present state again now. Firstly, I hated the old woman, and secondly, I saw myself as even more despicable.
"Seeing you after such a long time, there is nothing more joyful!"
Her mother seemed to be trying to get some kind of hint from me, who had visited after a long time. However, fearing to get any deeper, I wanted to leave the place as quickly as possible. I finally tried to stand up with a clear stance.
Suddenly, the door to the inner room opened roughly, and a man abruptly stepped onto the wooden porch. He was a stranger I had never seen before.
The man, looking slightly flushed, glared at me for quite a while for some reason. His gaze was so fierce that I had to avert my own eyes. He glared at Gye-sun's mother and Gye-sun in turn with the same intense eyes, eventually threw a few rough words at Gye-sun, and hurriedly went outside bareheaded.
He was a strange man. His aggressive attitude was even more incomprehensible. Why did he have to glare so fiercely at me, a complete stranger? What had that aggressive man, the young woman, and the mother been discussing and planning in the dark room? Even while trying not to think about it, I could not help but let my thoughts darken to this point.
"He is a relative who came up from the countryside."
Her mother explained this to me as if making an excuse, even though I had not asked. But I did not need any excuses. Right or wrong, I had no choice but to believe my immediate intuition. In all likelihood, she probably excused my presence to that man by saying I was a relative from the countryside as well.
However, the more it seemed so, as I left the house, I felt an endless sorrow for the increasingly ruined household and Gye-sun's future.
Three years later.
During these short three years, there were many changes in my life too, but my youthful heart was still very romantic. Harboring a constantly beautiful dream in this romantic heart, I endlessly moved from port to port. To a heart ceaselessly seeking dreams, a port was the most attractive place. Clean streets, red lights, bright taverns, green liquor, young women. The blue sky, the rich sea, the ships floating on it, the distant horizon. Everything was unconditionally good.
Across the deep blue sea, in that land touching the deep blue sky, it always seemed as if something was beckoning and calling. When I cast my beautiful thoughts far across that sky, the distant horizon was like the beckoning hand of a pretty maiden. Whenever I loaded my dreams onto a ship, hoisted the sails to the wind by day and got drenched in moonlight by night, I could not suppress the urge to run away to distant countries without resting.
This beautiful fantasy materialized and ultimately came to be realized. For my friend Bak and me, who were intoxicated by the concept of wandering, the day had finally come to embark on the trip to Vladivostok that we had been planning for a long time.
It was a certain port on the east coast.
The blue sky shone healthily, and the May sea was exceptionally blue. A ship floating on it like a dreamโthat was the ship that would carry us away.
It was the day before departure, which should have been overwhelmingly busy, but since we were wandering travelers rolling around with nothing but our bare bodies, our voyage preparations were complete once we bought third-class tickets and tucked them into our pockets. For the remaining half-day, our last day in this port, we decided to share a farewell drink at a port tavern with our friend Gim, who was seeing us off.
The small cafe, standing high up and facing the sea, was clean and quiet. Walls the color of duck eggs, crimson curtains, green potted plants on the standsโall of these harmonized cheerfully with the color of the sea seen far through the window. It was a quiet afternoon, with the wall clock striking two 'ding-dong'.
"Liquor!"
Settling down by the window, we raised our glasses high, expressing our dreams and future ambitions about the unknown land. The sound of clinking glasses overlapped with the softly sung humming of the serving girl sitting next to us, reflecting through the quiet cafe.
"Flowing and flowing..." A drifting melody full of sorrow strangely stimulated our wandering spirits. Flowing and flowingโthat must be her destiny and ours alike. Whether north to Siberia or south to the South Seas, flowing and flowing without knowing a place to settle was the very state of us both. Though we had not set off yet, we felt an exotic sentiment in this port, in this tavern, as if we had already gone far overseas.
The serving girl sang the song with unusual emotion. The melody, brimming with sorrow, flowed continuously. Now, in this quiet tavern, everyone was dreaming their own dreams. The serving girl singing the song, the three of us listening closely, and the girl who had been leaning against the windowsill on the other side, staring blankly at the sea for a whileโeveryone was momentarily still, as if reflecting on their own flowing, drifting selves.
"It is liquor!"
"Fill the glasses to the brim!"
Washing away all sorrow, I shouted valiantly. I roared gallantly, as if to say, "Kill the dreams, action is what matters!" The serving girl who was singing smiled with her red lips again and poured the liquor. As if trying to conquer all sentimentality, we recklessly gulped down the alcohol. Once filled to the brim, we drained it in one breath and asked for more.
However, when my eyes fell on the girl leaning against the windowsill over there, blankly looking at the sea, there was something that inexplicably struck my heart. Her detached demeanor, far from her profession, had a grace unlike a tavern serving girl, and there was something profound in the way she silently watched the sea with the hot setting sun heavily on her back.
Whether she was lost in old dreams, lamenting the present, gazing into the future, thinking of the land across the sea, or missing a loved one there, her figure, silently watching the sea, was incredibly pitiful. I even felt an urge to stand up and go over to her, but afraid of breaking her quiet mood, I asked the serving girl pouring our drinks.
"Yuri-chan!"
As she called out toward the other side, the girl who had been looking only at the sea quietly wiped her tears with a handkerchief and turned this way. Her facial features were not clearly visible, but I could faintly see her disheveled hair and her makeup ruined by tears. She paid no attention to this side and turned back toward the sea.
"Ano hito wa itsudemo, naite bakari iru no yo." (That person is always just crying.)
Tama-chan explained like this. And she gave a rough outline: that she came to this cafe about a week ago, that it was her first time as a cafe waitress, thus she was not skilled at serving customers, that she did not open her mouth a single word about her past, and that she always just shed tears alone.
Judging from her attitude and this story, she was likely not a sentimental bourgeois girl, so I could guess she too was an unfortunate person who could not live a bright life like others. From where had this sad life flowed, and where would it flow next? Flowing and flowing... When I thought that it was all the same fate, though we were strangers to each other, I could not help the piece of my heart that leaned toward her.
On this last day before setting off on a long wandering journey, I wanted to exchange at least a word with her, who seemed to deeply understand life.
"Yuriko-san!"
I finally called out to her. But she just remained lost in meditation. Not getting an answer, I felt embarrassed and just fell silent.
Then, this quiet cafe broke its calm atmosphere as it welcomed new guests. A Japanese policeman in uniform and a man in plain clothes, appearing to be a detective, pushed the door open roughly and entered. It did not suit a uniformed policeman to come into a cafe, so I suddenly got a bad feeling that some misfortune might befall the three of us. I trembled with anxiety, thinking that our long-awaited Vladivostok trip might be ruined again.
"Danna wa doko da?" (Where is the master?)
The man in plain clothes shouted like this, and then went upstairs alone without hesitation.
He thoroughly looked around the room.
It seemed inevitable that something was going to happen. We wanted to leave the place quickly, but since things had already come to this, it seemed doing so would be even more disadvantageous. We had no choice but to sit perfectly still and take whatever was coming.
The man who had been glaring at us shifted his gaze to Yuriko on the other side. He stepped closer and closer to her, and finally slapped the back of the girl, who was lost in thought.
Yuriko, startled, looked up at him, then covered her face with both arms as if she were about to faint, and stepped back a few paces. He shouted something loudly and roughly grabbed her. Yuriko, seemingly deeply terrified, wordlessly struggled to break free.
When we realized that the one in trouble was not us but Yuriko, we felt no small amount of relief, but seeing misfortune fall upon the dreaming Yuriko, we felt apologetic and pitied her.
Yuriko, who had struggled relentlessly to pull herself away, became exhausted and collapsed on the spot.
Suddenly, like a dam bursting, a loud cry erupted from Yuriko's heart. It was a crying sound that seemed overwhelmed with distress and sorrow.
I stood up immediately. But when I realized that it was nothing more than useless, powerless righteous indignation, I felt heartbroken.
The plainclothes man who had gone upstairs came down hurriedly. Behind him, the couple who seemed to be the master and the proprietress followed respectfully. They instructed the couple about something and then pulled up the fallen Yuriko.
"Saa, issho ni yuku n da!" (Come on, you are going with us!)
I figured she must have surely engaged in some illegal trade or scammed a wealthy customer.
They dragged out Yuriko, who was thrashing about saying no, just as she wasโin her clothes, with her hair disheveled, and her face wet with tears.
Her face, wet with tears! Only now did I see her clearly. My gaze was temporarily nailed to her face. And the second momentary death! The whirlwind of surprise and agitation blew. Yuriko, without a doubt, was Gye-sun. It was Gye-sun wearing a kimono.
I wanted to run to her and let her know it was me. But she had already been dragged outside the door. She had not seen me either. That was destiny.
It was like after a storm. Not knowing what to do, I listened for a moment to the tavern proprietress's story.
According to her story, Yuriko was a woman who had run away from Seoul a week ago. Her family was poor, so she was sold off to a certain man, and when she was abandoned by that violent man, she was sold to a second unknown place. But she found it disgusting and hated it so much that she finally escaped that house and ran away as she pleased.
I mourned that I had once again brushed against the fate of Gye-sun, whom I had decided not to think about or get involved with. What kind of cruel joke of fate was this?
Gye-sun's pitiful final figure suddenly floated before my eyes. I now felt a newfound attachment that I had not felt before. And I remembered her family as well. What must have become of that family I saw three years ago? The thatched cottage side-dish shop in the back alley, her mother and father, and eventually even their only daughter having to be sold off like thisโthe process of their downfall seemed to be vividly reflected before my eyes.
Gye-sun's figure floated before my eyes once more. My mind was in chaos. I did not know what I should do. Should I chase after her? But what use would that be? I was too powerless to save her. And tomorrow is the day I leave for Vladivostok with my friend. I have great ambitions for the future. For those ambitions, I had to keep moving forward... However, I could not suppress the feeling of deep apology toward her from the bottom of my heart.
Pulled by my friends, I left the cafe and walked along the darkening coast, clouds of melancholy billowing up in my heart.
Wandering and wandering the sea, the port, and the streets... I clearly comprehended the wide world and the countless human lives. A firm resolve was nailed into my winged heart. Finally, offering all of my bright red blood... I threw myself in.
Last September, as summer was gradually aging.
As a committee member of a certain general federation, I took responsibility for investigating a certain incident and went all the way to Harbin.
Unexpectedly, the work ended easily, and I had two days of free time compared to the schedule. I met my friend Bak after a long time, and since it was my first trip to Harbin, I intended to get a detailed tour of Harbin's private life under Bak's guidance.
So finally, I looked around large and small streets, and even peeked into the dens of the famous Kitaiskaya street, where many Russians live. I got drunk on vodka and also met a girl with a beautiful face named Sonya.
Harbin at night was an even more beautiful city. The lights densely embedded in the deep darkness seemed connected to the sky and the stars. That night, too, parting from Bak, I could not resist the intoxicating excitement of the vodka and strolled along the banks of the Songhua River, taking in the cool breeze. Feeling a supreme pleasure in the beautiful night view of Harbin and the cold wind blowing across the Songhua River, I strolled along the riverbank and took a step or two into a small Chinese street.
Low houses, countless street stalls, carts with small wheels, unpleasant stench... Before I knew it, I had left the riverbank and entered the center of the Chinese district. Comparing vaguelyโthe night view is better than Vladivostok's, the complexity does not even come close to Shanghai's, its beauty is several tiers below Qingdao's, and the bustle is many times that of Seoul... Drifting along with the alcohol-induced excitement, I walked further and further into the streets like a sleepwalker, not knowing when to stop.
While walking so recklessly, I do not know how I took the wrong turn, but eventually I ended up in a small, unknown street. It was a dark, quiet street with no streetlamps and no sign of people. Turning that corner and walking a few spaces down an even smaller street, I discovered strange houses built squarely like kerosene cans, with no roofs and no eaves, lined up in a row. Only a few of them had their doors open, and faint lamplight seeped out from inside towards the street.
Even in my hazy state of mind, I got a strange feeling. It is a slum! I thought. There is no city in the world without a slum. In contrast to the magnificent stone buildings lining the streets, there are inevitably crumbling slums hidden away; all modern cities show this poignant contrast. Thinking I should see what the slums of Harbin look like, I walked closer to the front of the lined-up houses.
Getting close to the doorway of a house where faint lamplight was spilling out, I took a quick peek inside and ended up standing frozen on the spot like a totem pole.
Inside was a single-room space. In the room, there was a high platform, and on the platform, a mat and mattress were spread out. On it, a young Chinese woman was sitting lewdly with her two legs stretched out. She was a young woman wrapped in a bright blue Chinese dress, leaving her arms exposed.
Perhaps having seen me, she threw a smile and gestured toward me. Then, she pulled her two legs in, squatted, and rolled up her top dress with both arms, boldly revealing her naked lower half. Bathed in the bright blue dress and the faint lamplight, it looked like a mysterious pool of ecstasy. Feeling dizzy at the dazzling sensation as white as snow, I stood there blankly, out of my mind. During that time, two giant men appeared from somewhere, staggering, went into the room, and lunged lewdly at the woman. Before I knew it, the wooden board door slammed shut, and I heard the sound of a metal lock latching.
It is a den of vice! I realized it was not a slum, but a brothel. A terrifying brothel; without even the time to think about what horrible sins occurred inside, once lit, I could not escape the blazing red flames of sensuality, even if I tried. Still standing blankly, to my shame, I moved my feet to a place a few spaces down where faint lamplight also spilled out toward the street. Inside the room sat a similarly dressed Chinese girl. A bright blue dress, white arms, dazzling sensation... Without giving myself any room to reflect, I stepped straight into the room without hesitation.
Perhaps wondering how many rough men she had to endure in one night, the young Chinese girl seemed exhausted to the limit, sitting languidly without even thinking of raising her head when a customer entered. She did not put on a disorderly, ugly display like the previous girl either. Due to her overly quiet demeanor, I lost my spirit. However, since I had already entered like this, casting shame aside, I flopped down next to her and leaned my whole body towards her. Then, hooking my arms around her neck, I sharply lifted her face, which was bowed as if dozing.
"Huh?"
In an instant! My whole body felt as if it had petrified.
The whirlwind of surprise, doubt, and agitation blew a third time.
As that whirlwind passed, my two arms that had hooked around her neck dropped powerlessly.
Wondering if it was an optical illusion, I rubbed my eyes and looked at her again. But my recognition, now completely sobered from the alcohol, had not a single point of error. It was definitely her.
What bizarre fate is this. Who would have ever dreamed I would meet her again like this in a dark corner of an unfamiliar city, on a night in a far-off foreign land? It is a story like a lie. But the god of destiny always seems like a spiteful little girl who likes such bizarre and malicious tricks.
"What kind of fate is this? Yes? Gye-sun!"
My disheartened voice was soft.
She, who had held onto me tightly, silently buried her face in my lap and just cried out loud.
From somewhere, several rough Chinese men suddenly barged in. A foul stench piercing the nose emanated from them. I was quite startled by their intrusion.
"Tonight, this Joseon girl is mine."
One of them, babbling like this in broken Qing language under the influence of alcohol, completely ignored me and grabbed the back of the collapsed Gye-sun to pull her up. One after another, another guy staggered and lunged.
I felt massive insult and rage. And I felt the duty to protect Gye-sun. Standing up on the spot, without any discretion, I shook off the arm of the guy lunging at her and planted a fist on him.
The three guys looked ready to rush at me all at once with terrifying momentum. Myself alone against three huge menโof course, I was no match for them. Gye-sun grabbed my arm and tried to stop me. But suddenly, I noticed a tall, slender man standing behind like a totem pole. Guessing the situation, I quickly took a few bills out of my pocket and swiftly slipped them into that man's hand.
The man showed me a satisfied smile, shouted loudly, and chased the three guys outside. Then he too closed the door and left.
We could barely sit down in that spot with peace of mind. Sitting face-to-face like that with a peaceful heart was exactly ten years since our farewell at the Nagwon-dong inn. For the first and last time, I held her hand. She, too, leaned her body against me for the first time in her life. Now, there was no feeling of shame or anything between us. We were two lonely souls in a foreign land with unfamiliar mountains and strange waters. We were no longer a person selling flesh and a person coming in to buy flesh.
We were two noble souls who had highly transcended that realm.
Toward her, I now felt a love I had not felt before. But it was not the love of a greedy man, but the great love of an older brother or a mother. I held her with the love of an older brother. She trusted me as if being held by a mother. Having come to a lonely land, she must have hungered greatly for a mother's love as well.
Her mother, speaking of her mother, what on earth had happened to her mother? I asked her about her mother, who had been forced to abandon and ruin her only daughter like this. Tears newly welled up in her eyes. And with a trembling voice, she barely spoke a single phrase.
"I do not even know if she is dead or alive."
"..."
Then what on earth had happened? It was impossible to know. But I did not try to ask further. More than that, the two of us had to get out of this place as quickly as possible. I could no longer leave her in this terrifying place like this. Whether finding her mother or seeking a new life, whatever we did, I resolved that I had to take her with me, even back to Seoul.
"Now, let us go with me quickly, even just as you are."
"What? Go?"
She was startled and refused. And she roughly explained the terrifying system inside the brothel and the brutal sanctions of the Chinese owners. She said if we were caught, both of our lives would be in danger. Still, I persuaded her and encouraged her. When I planned to get the owner's understanding and buy her out with the demanded price, Gye-sun shed tears of emotion. But after a long while, with an attitude of extreme despair, she boldly rolled up both her sleeves. It was pitiful. On the white flesh, from her arms to her shoulders, terrifying purple spots had broken out here and there. Due to the virulent disease infected by foreigners, her youthful flesh was gradually rotting away.
I was shocked again. But with a calm attitude, I comforted her and demanded firm resolve. And I promised firmly that I would secure a considerable amount of money early tomorrow morning, come back, negotiate with the owner, and settle everything, before I left the place. The bustling city fell quietly asleep, and the night in the foreign land deepened. Though it was a street I wandered aimlessly in a drunken stupor, to a clear mind, it was an extremely simple street. I easily navigated the streets and finally sought out Bak's lodging late at night.
Deciding to postpone our trip to Gyeongseong by one day, early the next morning, thanks to Bak's goodwill, I carried a considerable sum of money and went back to that place from last night with Bak.
In my mind, cloudy from lack of sleep, the events of the previous night played out like a film. No matter how much I thought about it, Gye-sun's fate up to this point had been too tragic. But life always starts from here. If she lives meaningfully like a human being from now on, is that not enough? I tried to force myself to think of everything brightly.
Keeping the Songhua River by our side, we carefully traced down the streets I had walked yesterday and eventually reached that place.
The squarely built houses like kerosene cansโthey looked even more dismal when seen by day. That Gye-sun was in there... It all seemed like a lie. But how good it would be if it were a lie.
There were houses with their doors still closed, and houses with them open. Passing a few houses, we went in front of the one we guessed was it, opened the door, and went in.
In the narrow room, two or three Chinese men were gathered, whispering and discussing something with flustered attitudes. Seeing us enter, they were startled and all looked this way. The tall, slender man among them was that man from last night, seemingly the owner.
I pushed through them and, above all else, looked for Gye-sun on the platform. Covered completely by a blanket, she seemed to be still sleeping. I stepped onto the platform and tried to wake her. The tall, slender man grabbed me, seemingly trying to stop me. Disregarding that, I tried to wake her. I shook her. But her sleep was too deep. Too deep, eternally deep.
I was bewildered. My mind was scattered. I shook her and shook her again, but her pulse had already stopped, and her entire body was cold. When I looked into her pale face, my heart was breaking with crushing sorrow.
"Gye-sun! Gye-sun!"
The world went dark through hot tears.
Through the endlessly pouring tears, I discovered a small medicine bottle and a piece of writing placed at her bedside. It was a suicide note addressed to me. Shedding tears, I read it down.
Chan-ho, please do not be alarmed. Do not reproach me for being rash.
There was no other path for me to take but this. With this body, where could I go and what kind of new life could I possibly build? In the end, I would just have to wait for death moment by moment, so I believed it would be more comfortable to die even an hour sooner. Because of my overwhelming gratitude, I die without any regrets. The noble love you showed me this nightโI lived as a human being for my final moment. I have nothing to resent. It is just that the world has been too bitter to me.
My mother and father may even be dead. Our parting in Seoul was our final parting. They are more pitiful than me. Even though I was in this unfamiliar land, I never forgot them for a moment. Please collect my bones after I die. If even those bones could return to my mother's embrace, there would be no greater joy for me.
Gye-sun.
I could not hold back the pouring tears. I lifted her cold face and held her in my arms for the last time. Her words are right, but after we had even made a promise last night, why must she die like this? It was too tragic that she had to die in her mid-twenties, in this corner of an unfamiliar land, without even seeing her father and mother from whom she had been separated for so long.
Bak, the three Chinese men, and I sat surrounding her and offered a silent prayer for her lonely soul. Tears of sorrow turned into tears of repentance. Could I say half of it was my fault? But whose fault was the other half?
It is this damn so-and-so. It is a damn world that would not satisfy me even if I chewed, chewed, chewed, and chewed it to pieces with my molars. Another ring of terrifying curse and firm conviction was carved into my bright red heart.
Even if this bright red heart were to tear into two pieces, I would absolutely resolve her deeply knotted grudges. Sitting with my head bowed before her corpse, I deeply swore a vow to her lonely soul in my heart.
